Ηταινία The Power of the Dog της Jane Campion, με πρωταγωνιστή τον Benedict Cumberbatch, ηγείται της κούρσας στη διοργάνωση των βραβείων Όσκαρ 2022. Ακολουθεί το Dune του Denis Villeneuve με 10, και τα Belfast και West Side Story με 7 έκαστο.
Η Campion απέσπασε το πρώτο της Όσκαρ το 1994 με το “The Piano”, η οποία ξεκίνησε το ταξίδι της στις Κάννες με το βραβείο του Χρυσού Φοίνικα. Η ταινία τότε ήταν υποψήφια στις κατηγορίες καλύτερης σκηνοθεσίας και καλύτερης ταινίας, αλλά έχασε από τη “Λίστα του Σίντλερ”, με τη σκηνοθέτη να αρκείται στο βραβείο καλύτερου διασκευασμένου σεναρίου. Στην προκειμένη περίπτωση πάντως, γίνεται η πρώτη γυναίκα σκηνοθέτης με δύο υποψηφιότητες για καλύτερη σκηνοθεσία.
Αν το The Power of the Dog θριαμβεύσει, θα είναι η δεύτερη συνεχόμενη χρονιά που μία γυναίκα στέφεται νικήτρια στις κατηγορίες καλύτερης ταινίας και σκηνοθεσίας, μετά την Chloé Zhao και το Nomadland. Η μόνη άλλη γυναίκα σκηνοθέτης που έχει κατακτήσει τα δύο βραβεία είναι η Kathryn Bigelow με το The Hurt Locker το 2010.
Όσον αφορά στις ερμηνείες, οι Olivia Colman, Benedict Cumberbatch και Andrew Garfield είναι μεταξύ των Βρετανών υποψήφιων ηθοποιών στις κύριες κατηγορίες. Η Judi Dench και ο Ciarán Hinds επίσης συγκαταλέγονται στις κατηγορίες των δεύτερων ρόλων για τη συμμετοχή τους στο Belfast, την αυτοβιογραφική ασπρόμαυρη ταινία του Sir Kenneth Branagh για μία οικογένεια στη Βόρεια Ιρλανδία κατά τη διάρκεια των Ταραχών στη βόρεια Ιρλανδία.
Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι η εν λόγω υποψηφιότητα της Dench την καθιστά τη δεύτερη γηραιότερη υποψήφια για Όσκαρ, μετά την υποψηφιότητα του Christopher Plummer για το All the Money in the World, όταν ήταν 88 ετών. Παράλληλα, ο Branagh είναι ο πρώτος καλλιτέχνης που εξασφαλίζει υποψηφιότητες για Όσκαρ σε επτά διαφορετικές κατηγορίες, αφού στο παρελθόν είχε προταθεί για ταινία live action μικρού μήκους, διασκευασμένο σενάριο, α᾽και β᾽ανδρικό ρόλο.
